Home learning 9th July 2021

Dear year five,

Once again you have shown me, the school, your family and yourselves how resilient, resourceful and reflective you all are. I am very proud to be your teacher. Well-done on reaching the weekend but first we have a full day of home learning ahead before we can rest over the weekend.  First a bit of house keeping. You (well your parents) can now collect your English books from the front office this will make writing your adventure story a bit easier. If you require more publishing sheets it might be an idea to write up on a computer and you can send it to me instead. We will still be using the same zoom link for all our zooms so I will see you 9:00am for a reading zoom. Please ensure you have watched all the reading videos for this week and have written your instructions for how to set a trap. Keep your Maya temples coming in, I was very impressed the ones you showed me on zoom. As always both zooms are compulsory, I know some people have given absence reasons but I need to know if you are attending zoom or excuse yourself through normal absent reporting procedures. Thank you.

Early Bird 8:30 – 9:00

I went over the answer for yesterday’s area question in yesterday’s zoom and the other questions are easily checkable via a calculator.

Today’s challenge – use known facts to help you solve these questions quickly.

Reading zoom and spelling check 9:00- 10:00 am

We will start with a spelling check and then review how to set a trap (if you watched the last reading video you will know)

I will then read a bit of the next chapter.

The rest of the zoom will depend if you picked up your English book. If you have you can get straight on with that or you stay on the zoom and I will help those who need some ideas. If you haven’t picked up your book then you edit either recount of your trip or your football report.

10:00 -10:30 am

Big Idea afternoon

Here are a few ideas of crafty activities you could do maybe over a few days.

Build a Lego Maya temple

What goes on there? Don’t forget to send me a picture!

If you don’t have Lego at home maybe you could use some other construction material. How about a temple out of cardboard boxes or cuboid nets. Don’t forget to tell me what sort of ceremonies happen there.

Zoom at 2pm – Science

Maya people were scientists and very advanced for their time. Join me at 2pm to find out more!

WCR – 1-2pm

I am still awaiting our Explorer book from school (our classroom is still in quarantine) so I don’t have a copy of the book but I have found it being read by some other teachers online. The chapter is quite long so it is in two parts. We started chapter 18 so you might want to fast forward a bit in part one (or enjoy again). Watch both parts and then make this prediction – what lies behind the vine curtain?

PE – 2-3pm

Join me on zoom in your PE kits (or sport clothes) ready for a workout. Mums, dads and siblings welcome!

At the end of the session we will check in with each other and I can answer any questions from your work today.

Have fun!

English – Can I write a recount using cohesive devices?

Today we are going to write a recount of our school trip to the chocolate story. I have added pictures to help you remember the events in order. The learning objective is to use cohesive devices to link ideas across sentences and also paragraphs. I have added a sheet below of some cohesive devices to guide you. Remember to add extra detail with brackets, commas and dashes and maybe how you felt experiencing the chocolate tasting!

Reading

Please log onto your reading plus account or read your book for 30 minutes this afternoon. Let me know which book you read and one new fact or word you have learnt from reading that book.

PE

Design a 15 minute HIT workout either record yourself completing the challenge or write down exercises with timings and rest breaks. This way we will have thirty 15 minutes exercise videos for the class to share.

April 19

Homework – week of the 19th April

We have begun our text The Explorer and as I suspected the children are already hooked. For homework they are going to design a front cover for the text. As a class we decided essential criteria for enticing front covers, these are:

  • Striking colours
  • Interesting pictures that help us decide what the book is about (prediction)
  • Title, author and illustrator names
  • Blurb with cliff hanger to make us read on without giving away too much
  • Review(s) from happy readers, possibly a star rating.

Attached is book line which the children will have been given at school but just in case you a spare. Also attached is this week’s spellings list, again this will be sent home. Please also encourage your child to read for one hour per week. This can be books, magazines, e-books or on reading plus, let me know if your child has forgotten their password.

Also this week as a school we are promoting the Big Pedal so come to school on self-driven wheels or on foot and the count goes towards our collective total.
