I am sure you will agree the explorer went on an exciting journey to the North Pole to try and find his old Professor. Today I want to know what would be your plan to get to the North Pole and information on how you would make it happen!

I want you take inspiration from a young boy called Oliver, his father is a polar explorer. Nine-year-old Oliver Chambers was on top of the world when he got a chance to join his dad at the end of his latest expedition – to the North Pole. The schoolboy travelled by helicopter to meet his father after work in temperatures of -25C and he planned the journey himself.

Here is a map of his journey.

As you can see he packed clothes to keep him warm and skis to ensure he can move on the freezing snow.

Unfortunately, he didn’t take a Leeds scarf with him…

Today I want you to be creative and write about how you would get to the North Pole. Here are some ideas to help you get started:

Would you use the same route Oliver did?

Can you draw a map to show your route?

What clothing would you take? Pack light or pack plenty?

What transport would you take?

How would you survive when you reach the North Pole?

The Professor is sure that 2, 3 and 5 are really significant in this film. He has explored everything around him to see if he can figure out why they are so important!

Today I want you to be like the professor and for you to explore these numbers. Have a look around your home, and whilst you are outside; from there, create a list explaining all of the things that you think link to these numbers. For example, I would write down the following:

  • I am currently looking at my window and I can see the numbers in the window panes. There are 2 small panes at the top which relate to the number 2. Below these, I have 3 smaller window panes which relate to the number 3. I then figured out that if I add all the window panes together I will have 5 window panes.

Early Bird Maths

To keep things fresh for you, here are 3 challenges for you to choose from, they do get progressively harder so have a think about which one you want to complete!

Maths

This week in maths we will be revisiting position and direction. We will be completing a lot of activities on grids like you can see below. It is good practise for you to recreate these grids when necessary, however when you can it is fine to just write down your answers. If you need any squared paper I will put some in the entrance to school, this can be collected or I can drop it off if you send me an email.

Please watch the following video to help you understand how to plot coordinates:

When plotting coordinates, some grids have the labels on the axis in the middle of the square like above, and some have the labels for the axis on the lines, like below. We will mainly be focusing on the below version this week but it is good to understand both.

Have a go at the following challenges and read the instructions carefully.

Word Power

–tion is the most common spelling. It is used if the root word ends in t or te.

–ssion is used if the root word ends in ss or –mit.

–sion is used if the root word ends in d or se.
Exceptions: attend – attention, intend – intention.

English

We are going to move onto a new stimulus for English; for the next two weeks we will be using a 10 minute video called 23 Degrees 5 Minutes to help us! The video will definitely stimulate your thinking and curiosity. For today, I have just given you a teaser of the video, it is the opening. Please watch below…

In the opening scene we see an explorer in the frozen arctic.  He is looking for someone and in the first minute it is left up to us to decide who it is. Today, I want you to answer the following questions and then drawn a picture of who you think it might be.

A man that disappeared 23 years and 6 months ago!

Who do you think it is?

What happened to him?

Why is this person prepared to die to try and find him?

The Bitesize sessions will be based around the 5 ways to wellbeing; connect, be active, take notice, keep learning and give. Each video will include a short explanation for adults on why it is important to promote wellbeing, followed by a ‘wake up and shake up’ for children’s minds and bodies to become focused, finished with a interactive activity that can be carried out between the child and adult.

Maths

Today you are going to collect some information from people that you know and start to present it in a table, chart or graph. You may wish to ask people what is their favourite: colour, TV show, computer game, food, football team, football player or animal – the choice is absolutely yours!

This will be a great way to connect with people that you know, you may wish to ring your close family members or friends to ask them.

Have fun with this!

English – free write day!

What do you see?

This is a brilliant song from the musical version of the famous ‘Snoopy’ cartoon. Picture the scene, the familiar characters Charlie Brown, Lucy, Snoopy, Linus, etc, are sat outside on a warm summer afternoon looking up towards the clouds telling each other what they can see.

When listening to this piece of music I would encourage you to close your eyes so you can visualise what each character is describing.

Writing ideas:

  • Go outside and ask write down what you can see in the clouds, this could lead to a piece of descriptive writing.
  • Write a description based on the clouds.
  • Retell the story of the song from one of the characters point of view.
  • Think about the different objects, landmarks or faces that you can see in everyday objects. Many people say that you can see faces on cars, can children find recognisable features in other objects?

Three-day creative task:

Science – Animal Classification

Animal classification – presentation

Animals are also grouped by other characteristics, such as what they eat, their skeleton, how threatened their species is in the wild, how they are adapted to live in their environment. Have a go at answering the following questions:

1. Look at the ten animals in the photographs, which do you think are invertebrates? Explain your answer.

2. Scientists classify the Galapagos giant tortoises as endangered species. What does the word endangered mean? https://galapagosconservation.org.uk/wildlife/galapagos-giant-tortoise/?gclid=CjwKCAjwlZf3BRABEiwA8Q0qq16n_Ryf2ppY5GZ-WkIC7S9rbWqo_NwXkH4YKYjAgfktqzhvP19cchoC3NUQAvD_BwE

3. Some of the Galapagos Islands no longer have Galapagos giant tortoises living on them. From what you have learnt about the Galapagos Islands explain why you think this might be.

4. Many of the islands now have goats living on them, how do you think these may affect the Galapagos giant tortoise populations?

5. The puma is a predator. Explain what ‘predator’ means, and how the puma is adapted to be a successful predator. https://sciencing.com/adaptations-puma-8497983.html

6. The greater rhea is adapted for life on the grassy plains of South America. How is it adapted to avoid being caught and eaten by its predators? https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/birds/g/greater-rhea/

Answers:

1. Number 7 is the invertebrate, it has a hard external skeleton (exoskeleton)

2. In danger of becoming extinct due to threats such as competition, lack of habitat, human encroachment, hunting etc

3. Explorers throughout the last few centuries, and whalers in the 19th century, collected Galapagos giant tortoises when they passed the islands to use as food for their crews. Today, the greatest threats to the remaining tortoises come from introduced species, such as dogs, cats and rats which predate on juvenile tortoises before their carapaces harden.

4. Goats compete with the tortoises for the vegetation which they eat.

5. Predators hunt, kill and eat other animals. The puma is well adapted to life as a predator, it is powerful and extremely agile. Unusually long back legs are thought to be an adaptation to bursts of high-speed running and jumping used to chase and ambush prey. It also has powerful teeth and jaws and acute senses to locate prey.

6. The legs of the greater rhea are long and powerful, with strong toes, and are adapted for running and for ranging over large distances. It is capable of reaching speeds of over 60 kilometres an hour, and, perhaps surprisingly, is also a good swimmer.
